4 Tips to Puppy Proof Your Home

By Hypro Premium / Dog Tips, Hypro Premium, Puppy / February 14, 2020

Becoming a pet parent is the greatest joy in life. But puppies love to explore. Their energetic nature results in some boisterous adventures and some happy accidents. Puppy proofing your home may sound complicated, but it is a simple process and can help you create a safe environment, where your new puppy can go frolicking about, without you worrying about their safety every moment. Here are 4 tips to puppy proof your home.

Check Plants

Some plants can be toxic to your puppy. Like babies, puppies love to explore every nook and cranny, chewing on things and licking anything that looks attractive. It is a good idea to research the plants in your home to check if they are harmful to dogs. This is necessary before you bring a new puppy home, to ensure that your puppy’s curious and joyful nature doesn’t cause vomiting, diarrhoea and organ failure if they ingest a plant or part of it.

Puppy Proof Your Rubbish Bin

Puppies have inquisitive noses when it comes to food. They can smell food whether it’s in a cabinet or in a rubbish bin. Puppy proof your rubbish bin by placing it in an enclosed space or an elevated place. It is also a great idea to choose rubbish bins that have a heavier lid which cannot easily be opened by a curious puppy.

The smell of garbage can get any puppy excited. Garbage items, which mostly contain human food, can cause gastrointestinal issues in puppies. Remember, to check all bins in your home, not just the ones with food as bins in the bathroom often contain hazardous objects like razors.

Keep Your Possessions Out Of Reach

Puppies tend to knock over things and topple valuable decorative pieces during playtime. Keep your beloved decorative items higher up in unreachable places. Follow a minimalistic decorative approach in your home if you don’t want your fur baby to chew on things. Also, be wary of small items which can be swallowed, as they can get stuck in your puppy’s throat.

Keep wires hidden to prevent electrocution or oral burns. If electric cords cannot be hidden, buy wire protectors from home improvement stores for creating a safe environment. Also, keep your medications stored safely away as they can be extremely harmful to your pet.

Create a Safe and Happy Environment for Your Puppy

Create a pet-safe zone with chewable toys and a dog bed, where they can lounge. Have plenty of chew toys for teething puppies to deter them from chewing your furniture, shoes or wires. Regularly sweep the floors to get rid of any small items that can harm your puppy if swallowed. If you have a yard, a strong fence without any holes will be very helpful.  As well as that, get rid of any rodent or insect traps on the ground, as these chemicals can be deadly for a puppy.

These are 4 tips to puppy proof your home which can easily be followed. Encourage your puppy to explore their new surroundings with their zealous and sprightly nature, and let them enjoy every minute of their life in their new and safe home.
