5 Tips to Stop Your Dog from Digging Up Your Backyard

By Hypro Premium / Dog Tips, Hypro Premium / February 21, 2020

Most dogs love to explore their environment and be outdoors frolicking around in fresh air all day. Part of this exploration may include digging in their backyard which can cause some frustration among pet owners especially if you have a garden. Dogs dig for a number of reasons so here are 5 tips to stop your dog from digging up your backyard.

Why Dogs Dig?

Dogs can resort to digging holes to amuse themselves but it can also be because of boredom, a lack of physical and mental stimulation or burying their precious possessions. During hot days your dog may dig to find a cool space or it could be in their genes to dig.

Dog Breeds That Love To Dig

Dogs generally love to dig and explore. However, sometimes digging may not be just a way to demand your attention or due to their playful and frolicsome nature.  Digging is a part of the genetic disposition in some dog breeds. These particular breeds that love to dig include the dachshund, Bedlington terrier, beagle, Siberian huskies and the Australian shepherd. Most of these dog breeds were raised for hunting, denning or for sheltering which explains their digging desire.

How to Stop Your Dog from Digging?

Here are some effective tips that can help your dog get over their habit of digging.

  • Relieve boredom by offering them time to play outside and get rid of stress and anxiety by regular exercise.
  • Dogs are social animals, who love to interact with humans and other animals alike. Take them for walks where they can meet other humans and animals.
  • Provide mental and physical simulation by taking your dog on regular walks, getting them signed up for dog sports, including training sessions in your daily routine, playing a game of tug-of-war or fetch to help them burn off their excess energy.
  • Create a designated space where they are allowed to dig. This is essential for those dog breeds in which this habit is hardwired and cannot be controlled.

These are some beneficial tips that can help control the digging nature of your dog. Divert their minds in other activities to keep them occupied and happy. If they stop or slow down on their digging, why not give them a tasty and healthy Hypro Premium treat? A happy pup, tired of having fun all day, is unlikely to dog holes in the earth.
