How to Effectively Train Your Dog Using Treats

By Johnny / Training / August 26, 2020

Training your pup can be a challenge. With their high-spirited energy and endless love for mischief and fun, teaching a young dog can become a bit of a handful. Fortunately, you can utilize some time-tested techniques to cement the training you are encouraged to do and create a solid foundation for your dog’s behaviour and manners. In this article, we discuss how using treats can help you train your pup quickly and easily with a lot of fun and excitement in between.

Understanding the Psychology

All mammals are quite intelligent, and so are dogs. In addition, they are creative and are great at problem-solving and understanding different situations through their strong instincts. The mammalian brain is hard-wired to repeat such actions that consistently gain favourable results. When training your pup, providing a treat serves the function of telling their mind that they have done something right and that repeating this good action will result in a reward. This positive feedback loop helps reinforce behaviour and training, and serves as a very potent tool during training.

Creating a Positive Association and Reinforcing Good Behaviour

Using treats, you can motivate your pup to deliver the same behaviour during their training consistently. After a bit of time, their mind will accept the fact that a particular action is good and that activities that do not result in a treat must be stopped. This reinforcement helps them create positive associations towards good behaviour, and this goes on to deliver effective results in the long run.

Supplement with Toys and Activities

You can use the same technique by supplementing treats with your dog’s favourite toys, letting them play fetch or have their toys if they complete a task properly or engage in the right actions. This helps them create even stronger connections in their brain, which can, with some time and effort, last a lifetime.

Choosing the Right Treats

The right choice of treats makes a lot of difference. Without the nutritious component of high-quality treats and dog food, your pup won’t be able to receive the same kind of “good feeling” that helps them learn new behaviour and complete tasks. During training, you should choose a natural and healthy treat for your pups, such as the HyproPremium range of dog treats, that are made with Australian meat and combine various fruits and vegetables to provide a balanced diet and nutritional content to your pup.
