Tips for Feeding Your Dogs and Maintaining Good Health in Summer

By Hypro Premium / Hypro Premium / October 7, 2020

Summer is a tough season for dogs, especially if they’re a breed with lots of fur. In hot climates with high temperatures, dogs can suffer since they can’t sweat. This causes their body temperature to reach alarming heights and can be potentially fatal to your pet. However, there are specific measures you can take to prevent this from happening.

One of the elements to your dog’s good health is a balanced diet, but many dog owners overlook that your dog’s nutritional needs can change depending on the season. To find out which items to feed your dog in the summer months, read on!

Dietary Needs in the Summer

In the summer, the possibility of dehydrating is real for your dog, and you want to feed it treats that will help cope with the heat. An excellent way to keep your pet cool is to freeze some of its favorite dog treats, like Hypro Premium’s Tasty Chews and put them in a bowl alongside some tasty fruits and vegetables. This ensures your pet will receive a high-quality treat that will also provide relief from the intense heat. Alternatively, dry dog food or kibble, such as the Ocean Fish offering, is also serviceable.

You may notice your dog eating less in the summer months. This is not a cause for concern, and it’s natural for your dog to consume fewer calories. This is because dogs don’t need extra layers of fat for isolation in the summer months, and to shed the weight, they will often prefer eating lighter meals. Introducing vegetables into your dog’s diet is a good idea, but make sure you pick non-toxic types.

Preventing Dehydration in the Summer

To prevent dehydration, you need to take specific measures like ensuring your dog can quickly drink from multiple water sources whenever it chooses. It’s essential to keep the water cold and place it in a shady area. A tip to provide a continuous source of cold water is to freeze water in your dog’s bowl overnight and let it melt as the day passes. This will keep the supply of fresh cold water in the dog’s bowl without you having to change it.

To end, an excellent tip to keep in mind is the amount of water your dog requires a day. Usually, a dog requires 60 to 80 ml of water per kilo, and the amount of water your pet needs will depend on its size. If you decide to take your dog anywhere in the summer, make sure you have access to water bottles, and try to keep to cool and shady areas, so you and your best friend can both enjoy the summer months!

Remember to opt for a nutritional and high-quality dog food brand like Hypro Premium to ensure the best health for your dog!
